This painting by Trevor Mitchell features an Eliza This painting by Trevor Mitchell features an Elizabeth II wall box on the side of a village shop, in a traditional British country village scene. Village scenes like these are often found on jigsaw puzzles in the UK.

This lovely Irish stamp design could once be found This lovely Irish stamp design could once be found on the outside of Baltimore Post Office in County Cork. It features the top of an old pillar box, perhaps even the Handyside style made between 1879 and 1905. Sadly Ireland, like the UK, has lost some of its local post offices, and this art work can no longer be found here.

Member David shares this beautiful "post office tr Member David shares this beautiful "post office tree" in Sheffield, a rural town in Tasmania. The tree features in one of Sheffield's world-renowned murals, and reflects the practice at the nearby Daisy Dell of gathering round a tree to catch up with other workers. Australian postal workers would regularly collect and leave mail at the tree for these workers. To the right of the box, the mural shows one of the workers resting against the tree trunk as he catches up with a letter from home. Sheffield has over 60 beautiful murals, several of which are painted in its annual Mural Fest.

For June we're looking at postboxes in art. This e For June we're looking at postboxes in art. This example is an art piece from Alex Chinneck, part of an installation called Alphabetti Spaghetti, and transforms a regular postbox into a knotted structure. You wouldn't want to try posting in here!

Many thanks to member Maria for the picture.

This unusual rectangular postbox was made by Jana This unusual rectangular postbox was made by Jana Enterprises in the 1980s. A shortage in regular pillar boxes resulted in various temporary solutions, including this plastic box. Jana also made pouch boxes, and these Jana postboxes were converted from that design. Most of them have struggled to cope with the British weather, and those that remain are usually faded to pink. This example can be found in northwest Wales.

This modern lamp box is in Sutherland, in the nort This modern lamp box is in Sutherland, in the north west of Scotland, and has a special feature - a bird flap to keep out nesting birds! This can be a serious problem in remote areas, where someone might not post a letter for a while, and Royal Mail can't use the box until the chicks have flown the nest. Unusually this box appears to be fitted into a lump of concrete rather than directly in the ground.

We've seen huge numbers of these lamp boxes installed across the UK, starting in 2010, so if you see one like this it might be an update for our directory!
