Dating back to 1856, they were manufactured by Thomas Suttie, a blacksmith from Greenock in Scotland. Following independence in 1947 a number of these boxes had the crowns removed and replaced with a concrete dome. A few Indian versions of this box have also been made and are in use as well. The pictured box is the only one in the UK, and is located at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh.

Today LBSG members from across the world are atten Today LBSG members from across the world are attending our Winter Meeting, which happens online. So I might be a bit late in replying to messages but I'll do my best.

These pictures are from St Fagan's National Museum of History in Cardiff - an original 'Penfold' pillar box from the 1870s, and a more-recent 'Hovis' style box from the reign of George V. It is surprising that early lamp boxes didn't have a space for a next collection tablet, since they had been present on pillar and wall boxes from the 1880s.

By special request, today's #PostboxSaturday post By special request, today's #PostboxSaturday post is from the Isle of Man Motor Museum. The Isle of Man has has its own Post Office since 1973, and before that services were provided by the UK's General Post Office.

There are five postboxes at the museum - a high aperture Anonymous Type B (1879-1883), a VR Type B (1887-1901), an oval GR pillar (1910-1936), a GVIR pillar with a post office direction sign (1936-1952) and an EIRI Type B with jutting aperture (1957-1980). If you want to know more about the boxes, and the accompanying GPO Bantam Bike (1965) and Electric Van (2007) you'll just have to visit!

If you've made it your New Year's Resolution to vi If you've made it your New Year's Resolution to visit more museums, why not see if they have any postboxes?

This Type B VR pillar box made by Andrew Handyside & Co can be found in the Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill. Established in 1848, Handyside were a huge iron foundry in the Derby area, not only manufacturing postboxes but also bridges, aqueducts and streetlamps. Handyside structures can be found as far away as Japan.

Sadly the Handyside foundry closed in the 1920s, and its location is now a housing estate.
LBSG Advent Calendar Day 24 - Happy Christmas! Di LBSG Advent Calendar Day 24 - Happy Christmas!

Did you know? Postboxes have appeared on Christmas Cards for over 160 years, often with a merry robin perched on top. How many postcards have you received with a postbox on?

Our editor Simon Vaughan-Winter designs his own cards, combining an old Christmas Card design with the covers of the LBSG newsletter. Didn't he do a fantastic job?

LBSG posts will return in the new year, once I'm back from my holidays. Please don't hesitate to ask any questions, but they might not be answered right away.

LBSG Advent Calendar Day 23 - Paint Jobs Did you LBSG Advent Calendar Day 23 - Paint Jobs

Did you know? Postboxes are supposed to be repainted every three years, but some postboxes may end up being painted much more often! This Carron Type A pillar box on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh was repainted four times in 2022! This box is often chosen for special paint jobs, and this year it turned platinum and pink! But before that it was repainted on schedule, and has returned to red following the Commonwealth Games.

By the way, if you find a postbox that doesn't look great, please let us know and we can report it to Royal Mail directly.
