Less than a year after his abdication, Edward and Less than a year after his abdication, Edward and his now-wife Wallis took a visit to Germany. Nazi Germany. They happily gave full Nazi salutes to Hitler, and Edward tried to advocate for appeasement with the Nazi regime. The BBC refused to broadcast one such speech in May 1939, just a few months before the war started. What would have happened to Britain had Edward stayed king? Thankfully we don't need to answer that.

Some Edward VIII pillar boxes were even removed after his abdication, and others not installed until much later, so we can't date all of these boxes to 1936-7, though they were made in that year. This example is a less-common Type A - the bigger of the two cylindrical sizes - and can be found in Birmingham. We previously showed it off during the Commonwealth Games.

Do you know why Edward VIII didn't last long as a Do you know why Edward VIII didn't last long as a king? Well he didn't die, he abdicated. He was in a romantic relationship with an American woman, Wallis Simpson, who was in the process of completing her second divorce (!). This did not go down well with the British public, and in the end he handed the throne to his younger brother Albert, who became George VI.

This Edward VIII pillar box is outside a hairdresser in Stamford, Lincolnshire, and used to be a sub-Post Office. The sepia picture shows what it looked like before the Edward VIII was installed.

How do you tell an Edward VIII Ludlow from an Edwa How do you tell an Edward VIII Ludlow from an Edward VII Ludlow? With a tape measure and a keen eye! Most of them have exactly the same cipher, but there are small differences in the dimensions and on the gorgeous enamel plate that give the game away. Very few of these were made, and even fewer are still in service. A few of our members own an Edward VIII Ludlow, and one has shared their pictures here. So enjoy!

We last shared this box in our 2021 advent calendar, but that was a long time ago and you all deserve to see it again. Like most Edward VIII pillar boxes, this one is the skinnier Type B.

After Edward's abdication the Balmoral box was promptly uninstalled until it was needed elsewhere. Members can read more about Aberdeen and its two Edward VIII pillar boxes in the latest Newsletter.

The pictured box is one of the most southerly UK-based Edward VIII pillars, being situated at the Isle of Wight Postal Museum, curated and cared for by member Arthur Reeder.
