Dec 8: Bath Postal Museum Sadly, not all museums Dec 8: Bath Postal Museum

Sadly, not all museums are destined to be with us forever. Bath Postal Museum was a fantastic home for lovers of postal paraphernalia, particularly being situated in the building where the first recorded Penny Black was posted in 1840, It had to close its doors in September 2023, and much of its collection was auctioned off - some ended up with LBSG members! The 'wagon top' lamp box pictured here was just one of its many postboxes on display.

The US Postal Service has as fascinating a history as the Royal Mail, and this museum in Washington DC shows its visitors how postal services transformed the country and the world. It contains a number of postboxes from around the world, the star of which must be this British Hong Kong pillar box, still painted its original red colour

Our close friends in the world of postboxes, their London museum is the perfect place to visit to learn all about the history of the postal service. Their main attraction is Mail Rail, a train ride through the narrow tunnels that used to send mail riding at high speed underneath the City, and they have many well-cared-for historic postboxes on display.

This open-air living museum in Dudley transports its visitors back to the West Midlands' heyday as a bastion of industry, covering over 250 years of history. The careful work of its curators means it of course has period-appropriate postboxes, including an original Penfold, and this more modern pillar box outside a snazzy post office.

Home to some of the great locomotives of British and international history, this museum tells the story of how engineering transformed travel in Britain and across the world from something slow and dangerous to fast and relaxing. Trains also transformed communication, allowing letters to be sent across the UK in record time, and some - such as the one pictured - were fully-functioning post offices!

Dec 3 - Ulster American Folk Park During the 18th Dec 3 - Ulster American Folk Park

During the 18th and 19th Centuries, many Ulster people left their homeland in what is now Northern Ireland to emigrate to the United States of America. Mountjoy Post Office, now part of the Ulster American Folk Park, was a lifeline for families now separated by the Atlantic Ocean. The Victorian wall box pictured here, installed some time from 1881-1901, would have been a key part of that.
