This unusual rectangular postbox was made by Jana This unusual rectangular postbox was made by Jana Enterprises in the 1980s. A shortage in regular pillar boxes resulted in various temporary solutions, including this plastic box. Jana also made pouch boxes, and these Jana postboxes were converted from that design. Most of them have struggled to cope with the British weather, and those that remain are usually faded to pink. This example can be found in northwest Wales.

This modern lamp box is in Sutherland, in the nort This modern lamp box is in Sutherland, in the north west of Scotland, and has a special feature - a bird flap to keep out nesting birds! This can be a serious problem in remote areas, where someone might not post a letter for a while, and Royal Mail can't use the box until the chicks have flown the nest. Unusually this box appears to be fitted into a lump of concrete rather than directly in the ground.

We've seen huge numbers of these lamp boxes installed across the UK, starting in 2010, so if you see one like this it might be an update for our directory!

Today's countryside postbox is in Rutland, and com Today's countryside postbox is in Rutland, and comes from LBSG member Paul. Despite being photographed just one week ago, it has a collection plate style dating back to 2007 at least, and its box number - OAK055 - does not match the box numbering scheme currently followed by Royal Mail.

Additionally this is an older Elizabeth II lamp box, but has a replacement collection plate holder from the 1980s-2010. We don't know when this was replaced, but Royal Mail have done well to re-use parts instead of replacing this with a more modern postbox.

One of the best locations for beautiful remote pos One of the best locations for beautiful remote postboxes is the Scottish Highlands. With the Royal Mail committed to ensuring almost everyone has a postbox within 500m of their home, there are hundreds of them around. This Highland box from the reign of George V and situated in an old stone wall features a modified aperture, widened in the 50s to accommodate larger mail sizes. Many thanks to LBSG member Dave, who took this picture last May.

Our theme for May is 'countryside postboxes', and Our theme for May is 'countryside postboxes', and we're starting off with this gorgeous Edward VII wall box in a brick pillar in Surrey. Sometimes it's hard to tell the difference between Edward VII and Elizabeth II, but here's a few clues: Elizabeth doesn't have numbers below the crown, and the style of the collection plate holder is different - Edward's boxes don't have space for the little metal tablet with the next collection day on it, though this might be added later.

This one is a size C from the second half of Edward's reign, though for this size of lamp box the differences from the earlier ones are so minor that even a LBSG expert spotter has to look hard to tell! Many thanks to member Ruth for sharing these images.
