The steel Type F (1968) and cast iron Type G (1974 The steel Type F (1968) and cast iron Type G (1974) pillar boxes were a failed experiment in square postboxes. Despite many design improvements, their modern shape was rejected by the British public who petitioned for a return to round postboxes. The Type Fs were also highly susceptible to corrosion from rain, and none remain on our streets - the last being removed in 2001

Solar panels on the top, big apertures on the front. It's a strange sight now but soon these upgraded postboxes will be visible across the UK. Are you concerned that your local postbox may be selected for upgrade? These are the features to look out for:

- Slimmer pillar box
- Jutting out aperture
- Elizabeth II/Scottish Crown cipher

It can be hard to see these changes in our beloved postboxes. How do you feel? We know many will be angry or saddened by the changes. Others may be happy - it's a new type of postbox to seek out!

After McDowall Steven folded, Carron Company took After McDowall Steven folded, Carron Company took up manufacture of Type A pillar boxes alongside the Type Bs they already made. That same year they altered the design of the aperture. The new wide, protruding slot made it easier to accept larger mail items.

Ludlow wall box were an early casualty of Elizabet Ludlow wall box were an early casualty of Elizabeth II's reign. By 1960 the Post Office had centralised provision of post boxes across the country, so there was no longer any need for a cheaper postbox affordable by sub-postmasters. There were also a handful of Scottish Crown versions produced for Scotland, which had rejected the EIIR cipher.
