A special letter in the post to celebrate our 50th anniversary! And what a beautiful envelope too!

Over the LBSG's five decades our archives have gathered a treasure trove of postbox history - hundreds of thousands of snapshots capturing places that in many cases no longer exist today.

This lovely size E George VI wall box once stood outside Bratton Fleming Post Office, tucked safely into its decorative brick pillar with Post Office Direction Sign perched on top. For years, both the box and the Post Office were at the heart of village life. Just a year after this photo was taken, the Post Office closed — and today, both box and building have completely disappeared. A small but meaningful piece of postal history now preserved only in the archive.

Our group began thanks to a wonderful book called The Letter Box by Jean Young Farrugia, then the assistant curator at the GPO Records Department. Jean became our very first president, and honestly, her encouragement has kept us going ever since.

Her book inspired our mission: protecting and preserving letter boxes. From our very first newsletter, we’ve been out hunting for old and unusual pillar boxes—starting with Edward VIIIs—and working with Royal Mail to keep them from being scrapped. It’s been quite the adventure, and we’re still at it 50 years later!

Amongst the presentations of the day, Tony Gibbs attended to present his Type K pillar box, a new design that would be appearing on British streets from 1980. Over the decades since we have had many more meetings, and seen many more new postboxes. But this was our first

50 years later, little could they imagine that their Letter Box Study Group would boast around 500 active members, and work closely with Royal Mail to help protect and preserve our letter box heritage.

This living Victorian museum invites its visitors to step back over 125 years to the end of the Victorian era. Sharing traditional crafts, vehicles and food, it also features this slightly less authentic replica Penfold pillar box.
