This photo from 1990s Devon shows a George V wall box where the collection plate has been removed. Perhaps the holder was damaged. The shop owner has painted the collection times directly onto the box!

Normally we only see boxes without collection plates where the box has a 'back door' for post office staff, but it's hard to tell whether that is the case here, or if this is a normal single door box. There might be a clue in the deeper red paint behind the missing plate area. Perhaps more experienced LBSG members can tell us more?

This fantastic hand-painted collection plate remains at the postbox in the Caledonian Hotel, Edinburgh. Royal Mail still collects from it, though you won't find the box on their online map and the collection times are long out of date.

This rural postbox is a little bit special. Though a first glance shows just an ordinary steel lamp box, a closer look reveals something odd about the collection plate. Dating to the early 90s, it looks a little different to our modern plates. We're not sure how this one has survived even the switch from a 'tin lizzie' to the modern box, but we hope Royal Mail leaves it as it is.

This Elizabeth II wall box in Aberystwyth dates to the 1960s or 70s, and looks smart in the wall of this modern cocktail bar. The keen-eyed among you may spot the more modern collection plate holder, and wonder why it's there. We do often see these on boxes at former post offices, where the wall boxes have a back door for the staff to use, but that's not the case here.

Spotting the different between the 'back door' wall boxes and the ordinary ones is tricky in these circumstances, as all have the royal cipher, but the giveaway is the words 'NEXT COLLECTION' under the aperture. Only ordinary wall boxes have these.
